Emergency response

In addition to oil and fire–fighting, Smit Lamnalco provides an arrangement of pre-planned emergency response, including offshore/onshore evacuation and emergency response to LNG incidents, such as boundary cooling, single/multi water curtain production and emergency towing.

Fire–fighting and oil spill response

The fire–fighting capability of tugs plays a crucial role in the overall safety system at oil and gas terminals and Smit Lamnalco vessels are fitted with a range of equipment meeting with Classification notation and customer–specific requirements to suit operational needs.

Our crews are highly competent in dealing with terminal emergencies, having attended specialist fire training courses supported by regular drills to ensure they are familiar with the resources available, the methodology required, response procedures established and liaison with port authorities and terminal operations staff.

The company’s teams are also highly–qualified in spill control and recovery techniques to deal with surface pollution, as well as in dealing with other pollution control measures, and are available to respond 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to any incident. They have gained their experience at sea, which is continuously updated via internal and external training.

Many Smit Lamnalco tugs are equipped with tanks of dispersing agents, pumps, spray booms and oil spill containment booms. Oil spill response includes setting up floating booms, spraying of dispersants, pumping out fuel remaining in the tanks, transferring fuel and other hazardous materials to recycling centres, cleaning the water surface with skimmers followed by treatment in settling tanks.

Line and hose handling

Line and hose handling at offshore terminals forms an integral part of the offshore loading operation and it is essential that both mooring and loading systems are maintained, and remain in full operational condition.

Experienced Smit Lamnalco terminal pilots and loading masters, risk assess each element of a client’s loading operation and then formulates operational procedure that eliminate or reduce all identified risks.

Marine support and consultancy

Depending on the marine requirements, Smit Lamnalco provides vessels best suited to the operation, including advice and consultancy in particular offshore operations.


Smit Lamnalco supplies safe, efficient and dependable pilotage to offshore, coastal and harbour terminals worldwide, offering a seamless ship/shore interface to expedite vessel turn around in port. The company is fully committed to IMO Resolution A.960(23) “Recommendation on training and certification and on operational procedures for maritime pilots” and is compliant with its recommendations; supplying clients with competent, professional and positively vetted personnel to conduct their marine activities in today’s high risk marine environment.

Working closely with federal governments, national associations and unions, Smit Lamnalco actively seeks to recruit local personnel into its marine training programs with a view to providing local pilots, loading masters and assistant loading masters at national terminals for the future. Its experienced marine staff work alongside clients and local government agencies to develop “Port & Terminal Rules and Regulations” information booklets and contingency plans based on international guidelines, industry recommendations and maritime best practice.

Safety and security

Smit Lamnalco works closely with customers in establishing robust and effective security measures to counter identified threats to their facilities and our operations in accordance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) code. Employees both ashore and afloat attend security training courses to familiarise themselves with the code and their duties and responsibilities regarding compliance.

Vessels conduct regular drills to maintain their level of preparedness. We also recognise that due to our role as a provider of marine services to onshore and offshore terminals throughout the world, our services form an integral part of security planning. We place a high priority on the safety and security of our seafarers and our customers’ employees and facilities. In complying with all international regulations, and the highest standards of ship and facility security at all times, we contribute to the safe, secure and efficient marine terminals operations.

Towage and escorting

The company owns, operates and provides crewing for the most modern terminals, river and open water tug fleets in the world, in addition to a range of high specification offshore support vessels, utility craft and crew boats.

A full range of escort, towage and berthing services is available to assist oil tanker and gas carrier operations. Integrated tug master/pilot training prepares Smit Lamnalco people for routine operations as well as emergency response preparedness. Safe operation is a key priority and the company provides onboard training and assessment before project start–up to enable a first class service from day one.

Smit Lamnalco’s in–house state of the art tug manoeuvring full mission bridge simulator ensures that all crew members are fully briefed in the demands of the particular areas they will be working in.
